My past border runs, have always turned into a mini vacay and I would leave Costa Rica for 3 days and then returned with no issues in either country. Needless to say we make it back to Costa Rica by 12pm and were exhausted and happy to be home. Can I just tell you the supermarket was so freaking neat that I did not want to remove anything from the shelves for fear of messing it up! My splurge spicy hummus, pita chips, everything bagel chips and get this….camembert cheese!! Yes, you can can those item with ease in the US but in Costa Rica they are going to cost 10x more !! My bill was under $20.ĭuring our early morning stroll what suddenly appears and we walked by at least 10 times….the liquor store!! Let’s say Elaine came home with lots of booze for $60!! Gotta love Panama! Ok.now we have 2 hours to kill, what do we do? Walked back to Panama ,had breakfast Burger King and did a little food shopping. Costa Rica will ask you for a flight ticket out of the country, so be sure you have that!! The owner was boasting about their amenities and was very funny but we were like ,” Calm down ,one night and we’re outta here! We just need 2 beds and wi-fi! ” The pool was a perk but we were not expecting to go for a swim at a border hotel.Ĭhecked out of both places with no issues. We walked back to Costa Rica and we decided to stay Casa del Sur. So we walked the streets looking for a place to crash for the night. Is it the end of the world that we had to stay in Panama overnight? Of course not! We both live in Costa Rica and everything is “Pura Vida” and this is a “Pura Vida” moment damn it!! Honestly I have to say, both of us have heard about this but figured, “That’s not going to happen to us”! The system wouldn’t let us through until then.” Our reaction? “Ahhhhhhhh……….ok? We get to the window and the agent kindly tell us,” You can’t leave, you have to stay for 5 more hours. We gave up on being drunks and decided to check out of Panama. So, we decided to go have some lunch and by the time we were done it was almost time to cross the border back into Costa Rica. When you’re walking around Paso Canoas, there is just so much going on, you really don’t know where to look and we searched and searched for the liquor store and never saw it. Ok, you get off the bus and your journey begins……. ![]() By 2pm we arrive at the Paso Canoas Costa Rica /Panama border. We make one 30 min stop for snacks and a restroom break. Our trip should take about 3 hrs more or less if there are no accidents /traffic on the road. The bus( Tracopa) leaves San Jose 7am and finally gets to us around 10:30ish. If anything they are probably thinking,’Oh those crazy gringos in that stupid machine” as they pass by us! ![]() Hey, don’t knock it, it is a cool form of transportation that can get you around Manuel Antonio/Quepos area and hell, even the bus stop to Panama! I’m assuming it is slightly annoying to the drivers driving behind it but they never honk or give you dirty looks. The beginning of this journey starts out with my boss driving me and my friend Elaine to the bus stop in a golf cart. I will share with you the one I just did since that is the one that makes me appreciate all of the runs I’ve done differently in the past. ![]() ![]() I have been doing border runs for the last 2 years living in Costa Rica. If you ask any expats how this gets done, you will get many different versions and believe it or not they all are probably true. How can you stay longer?
